Created by the famous Italian graphic artist Guido Crepax, Valentina is one of the most iconic, sexy graphic novel heroines of all time. With her distinctive black bob and demure, reserved exterior, Valentina is the very essence of European sophistication. However, below the surface burns a passionate young woman eager to inhabit another world; a world where she can explore her dark attraction to that which most frightens her. In VALENTINA AND THE MAGIC LANTERN, Crepax takes us deep into the heart of her most intensely erotic, fetishistic fantasies - a journey which will heat the blood and set the pulse racing as Valentina is drawn into a labyrinth of elaborate costumes and thrilling liaisons; where physical gratification comes in every shape and size, and absolutely anything goes.

First published in Germany in 1929, The End and the Beginning is a lively personal memoir of a vanished world and of a rebellious, high-spirited young woman's struggle to achieve independence. Born in 1883 into a distinguished and wealthy aristocratic family of the old Austro-Hungarian Empire, Hermynia Zur Muhlen spent much of her childhood travelling in Europe and North Africa with her diplomat father. After five years on her German husband's estate in czarist Russia she broke with both her family and her husband and set out on a precarious career as a professional writer committed to socialism. Besides translating many leading contemporary authors, notably Upton Sinclair, into German, she herself published an impressive number of politically engaged novels, detective stories, short stories, and children's fairy tales. Because of her outspoken opposition to National Socialism, she had to flee her native Austria in 1938 and seek refuge in England, where she died, virtually penniless, in 1951. This revised and corrected translation of Zur Muhlen's memoir - with extensive notes and an essay on the author by Lionel Gossman - will appeal especially to readers interested in women's history, the Central European aristocratic world that came to an end with the First World War, and the culture and politics of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

'Rich and riveting, complex and compelling, powerful and poetic.'—Peter M. Gianotti, Newsday In Odessa, the greatest port on the Black Sea, a dream of cosmopolitan freedom inspired geniuses and innovators, from the writers Alexander Pushkin and Isaac Babel to Zionist activist Vladimir Jabotinsky and immunologist Ilya Mechnikov. Yet here too was death on a staggering scale, as World War II brought the mass murder of Jews carried out by the city's Romanian occupiers. Odessa is an elegy for the vibrant, multicultural tapestry of which a thriving Jewish population formed an essential part, as well as a celebration of the survival of Odessa's dream in a diaspora reaching all the way to Brighton Beach.

Long before the movies were created, peepshows were appealing to a public eager for entertainment and enlightenment. The peepshowman and his box were a common sight on bustling city streets and quiet village greens. He attracted a crowd with music, animals, puppets, and clever patter and then might offer a view of a famous battle scene or a glimpse of a storied landscape, a stroll through the public squares of distant capitals or a peek at a fabled monument. Such views could challenge the boundaries of ordinary life, and satisfy a growing hunger for information. Peepshows: A Visual History offers the reader a rich sense of the history of this mysterious and magical box. The book includes nearly 200 annotated images, many never before published.

British Short Fiction in the Early Nineteenth Century Book Review:

In spite of the importance of the idea of the 'tale' within Romantic-era literature, short fiction of the period has received little attention from critics. Contextualizing British short fiction within the broader framework of early nineteenth-century print culture, Tim Killick argues that authors and publishers sought to present short fiction in book-length volumes as a way of competing with the novel as a legitimate and prestigious genre. Beginning with an overview of the development of short fiction through the late eighteenth century and analysis of the publishing conditions for the genre, including its appearance in magazines and annuals, Killick shows how Washington Irving's hugely popular collections set the stage for British writers. Subsequent chapters consider the stories and sketches of writers as diverse as Mary Russell Mitford and James Hogg, as well as didactic short fiction by authors such as Hannah More, Maria Edgeworth, and Amelia Opie. His book makes a convincing case for the evolution of short fiction into a self-conscious, intentionally modern form, with its own techniques and imperatives, separate from those of the novel.
